The North

Jameos del Agua - Cesar Manrique's conversion of volcanic tubes into a concert hall (offering classical and contemporary concerts) and subterranean lake containing a species of blind albino crab that is said to exist nowhere else.

Cueva de los Verdes - take a 2km (1.2-mile) guided walk through a lava cave.

Mirador del Rio - clifftop viewpoint and café/bar overlooking Isla de Graciosa designed by Cesar Manrique.

Mirador de Haria - a pass with magnificent views and known as the "valley of a 1,000 palms." This is the greenest place on the Island.

Mirador de Guinate - viewpoint overlooking El Rio and Isla de Graciosa.

Parque Tropical - over 1,300 species of birds and animals.

La Santa Sports Centre - facilities for numerous Olympic sports catering for professionals, amateurs and families alike.

Isla de Graciosa - it is one of the smallest islands off the north coast and is a wildlife reserve. It can be reached by passenger ferry from Orzola.

 

Central Lanzarote

Arrecife (the capital of Lanzarote) - Castillo de San Jose - explore the castle that has been converted into a world-class modern art gallery by Cesar Manrique.

Yaiza - winner of a competition for the most beautiful village in the Canaries.

Costa Teguise - Acua Lanza water park.

Teguise - see elegant buildings and a vibrant Sunday market in the former capital.

Fundacion Cesar Manrique - see a remarkable house and art gallery built into a series of volcanic bubbles at Tahiche.

Jardin de Cactus - Cesar Manrique's garden of cacti at Guatiza with over 1,400 species. This area is home to the cochineal beetle whose cultivation provides the red dye.

Museo Agricola El Patio - prize-winning museum of country life at Tiagua.

Castillo de Santa Barbara - visit the castle perched on the lip of a volcanic crater near Teguise. It is now a museum.

 

Southern Lanzarote

Timanfaya National Park - see volcanic splendour in the "Mountains of Fire" - a moon-like landscape.

El Golfo - a volcanic crater eroded by the sea, leaving a bright green lagoon.

Los Hervideros - waves eroding the volcanic cliffs into cave arches and stacks.

La Geria - see vines grown in volcanic picon. The largest wine-growing region in the Canaries. Visit the bodegas (wine cellars) for tastings.

Femes - a village on a hill with stunning views.

Beaches - Lanzarote's best beaches are found in the south of the island.
